Want to move, can use some help... (San José)

I am planning to retire soon and am looking for advice on a potential move to Costa Rica. I am single, want to live in a place overlooking water (lake or sea), where it's safe to be on my own but have the opportunity to embrace the culture and make friends.
I am an amateur potter, so a place with facilities to do that would be nice but not critical. I'd also be interested in volunteer work and a place to learn Spanish.
Can you give me some tips?
