Why Americans move abroad … (and do they like it?)

Every year, we publish one of the biggest global surveys for expats — Expat Insider — where we ask people living around the world about every aspect of expat life. We’ve rounded up key facts about the typical American expat: what motivated them to move to a new country, what they enjoy about life abroad, as well as what they struggle with the most.

The countryside is diverse & breathtaking. The seafood here is so fresh, and Santiago is perfectly located (an hour to ski, a little over an hour to the sea, and amazing Mediterranean-like climate).

What Americans wish was different in Santiago de Chile

I can’t stand customer service and the rudeness of people here. The banks and most businesses close at 1:30 you can’t even find a good working ATM. Also things like gas, water, phone, and different bills have to be taken care of in person.

A significant downside is that visa's take a long time and it's hard to get settled without the local ID number.

Third world service mentality. The bureaucracy is too much for the level of service and fosters illogical behaviours. The locals are unfortunately living in a culture that promotes laziness and underachievement. Customer service is non-existent among Chileans.
