Football fans have fixed their eyes on France and England with the European Championship about to kick off in June. Fans are sure to see the best national teams from the continent battling each other for the prestigious trophy. But what most Shanghai residents are probably unaware of is the fact that the city will host its own tournament on July 10 — one not restricted to European teams. Instead it’s a “World Cup,” with 12 countries competing.
The World Cup 8’s is a eight-a-side football tournament that was created this year by VP ALIEN and will take place every year in Shanghai. In the eight-a-side version of the sport, a team consists of seven field players and one goalkeeper, rather than the usual 11 players, on a half pitch. The initial idea when creating the tournament was to bring together the expat community in the city through football. Another aim was to contribute back to society, with proceeds from ticket sales being donated back to charity. As the idea began to formulate, it turned out that there was no other city in the world putting on an event of such scale. All of the teams would then wear their national colors with their flags when they compete. Each community living in Shanghai will send forth their strongest team to compete for the ultimate prize : “ World Champions of the City “.
To create a tournament of this scale, It is understandable to have a mega-metropolis city like Shanghai, where there are so many nationalities. You could even make this a 24-team tournament rather than a 12-team tournament. When you start to look around the world, just how many actual cities have such an array and concentration of countries [represented] as Shanghai does?
There is a decent expat footballing community here in Shanghai and so the level is actually much higher than you ever find at other eight-a-side soccer events. Practically every participating team had been playing on a regular basis and include high amateur-level players. This is the best amateur tournament in the entire Shanghai by a mile; and the entire China for that matters. Everybody should get involved in this.
