Expat Life & Facts about the Local Economy in Tashkent

A fascinating city at the economic and cultural heart of Uzbekistan, Tashkent has spent much of the 21st century transforming itself into a vibrant cosmopolitan hub, with ambitious new builds sharing space with soviet-era architecture and more modest farms and townhouses. Gas, oil and coal are the main economic drivers, and the reason for most expats to set up shop here, although tourism and services are starting to gain traction. Crime rates are low and standards of living are fairly good in the city, although public healthcare is not yet on a par with the West and it is strongly advised that expats seek treatment in one of the city's private hospitals. Uzbek and Russian are the dominant languages, so a rudimentary understanding of at least one of the two is a major asset to successfully integrating into Tashkent life. Islam is the dominant religion of the city, but religious tolerance is generally high and if you respect the traditions of the local populace, you can expect a warm and sincere welcome, with a nightlife and cultural scene to rival many more popular tourist and expat hotspots.

InterNations is the largest global network for expatriates, with communities in 420 cities around the world. Meet fellow global minds in your city of residence or get to know local expatriates before you're moving or traveling abroad and never feel like a stranger. InterNations makes it easy for you to stay in touch with your expat friends, both online and offline, so you can grow your network of friends and contacts from all over the world. Whether they live in Hamburg or Hanoi, InterNations allows you to be close to them even if they are miles away.
