Whenever Beethoven was able to escape to the countryside, his mood immediately lifted. Join Chief Conductor Martyn Brabbins as we venture into nature, keeping the joyful composer company in the Pastoral Symphony and delighting in the murmuring brook where the nightingale sings its song. Our own brilliant concertmaster Marika Fältskog gently draws out the poetic flight of the lark from her violin in The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Celebrated Malmö composer Benjamin Staern, like Dante in The Divine Comedy, finds himself in purgatory, but after an eventful and richly sonorous journey in Symphony No. 2, we finally arrive in paradise.
