Simple, captivating, and undoubtedly one of the funniest contemporary dance pieces of recent years: In “Simple,” Argentine choreographer Ayelen Parolin—who has lived in Belgium for 20 years—deprives herself of one of her most important dance partners—music. And yet the piece is anything but quiet.

Without music, it’s up to the three dancers, in their colorful, speckled, form-fitting jumpsuits, to set the rhythm. They use their bodies as percussion instruments, setting the pulse and tempo and sweeping the audience along with them.

“Simple” is a tribute to Merce Cunningham’s “Summerspace” Protected content , one of the most famous works of modern dance, which radically broke with traditional notions of choreography.
Ayelen Parolin simplifies the original into a Dadaist romp: the performers tirelessly repeat the same movement sequences, executing them with unusual gestures, quirky hops, and bewildered facial expressions.
The unfinished and the return to the beginning are the central themes of the piece, a fascinating exercise in the construction and deconstruction of contemporary dance.

Never has failure been so beautiful as in this stage disaster disguised as a dance piece: The three performers demonstrate a healthy dose of self-irony and let themselves be guided entirely by the pure, childlike joy of dance and movement.
