Spanning four decades, the exhibition highlights her struggle against structures that prevent women from exercising self-determination, particularly over their own bodies. On display are her famous “shooting pictures,” female figures, happenings, and films, as well as models of large-scale sculptures set in the landscape. Her artistic milieu and collaborations with Jean Tinguely and Robert Rauschenberg are examined, as are comparisons with her female contemporaries, including Yayoi Kusama, Dorothy Iannone, and Alina Szapocznikow.
Niki de Saint Phalle’s subversive social impact and her simultaneous longing for harmony gave rise to an ambivalent body of work that made the French-American artist famous during her lifetime and continues to gain relevance to this day.
The exhibition DREAM MACHINE, featuring more than Protected content , is being organized in cooperation with the National Museum in Wrocław and in close collaboration with the Niki Charitable Art Foundation in San Diego and the Sprengel Museum in Hanover.
