Spaceship Living Room. The moon landing as media event.
The night of July 20/21, Protected content a long-cherished dream of humankind become reality as a man set foot on the moon for the very first time. Up to Protected content viewers on earth watched live as US astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped out while hundreds of millions more listened to radio coverage of the Apollo 11 mission.
This makes the first manned lunar landing one of history’s biggest-ever media events, a title it has retained up to the present day. And there is something else special about it: Like no other media event, it closely interlinked communications technology and the actual event being communicated.
“Spaceship Living Room” traces the wave of fascination generated by the moon landing in East and West while examining the interactions it created between space travel, television, and the emergence of global communications networks.
