Egypt's "Zar" ceremony (Arabic: زار), is an ancient tradition of exorcism and a healing cult that drives out possessing spirits, sometimes called jinns or demons, that cause malady. Apart from being an ancient tradition, considered pagan practice by Islam, it is an essential part of the Egyptian culture, accompanied by drums and dancing by women who found a place to shine amid strict patriarchy.
Oriental dancers have been strongly inspired and fascinated by the hypnotic Zar in dance and music and it is common for them incorporate elements of Zar in some of their dance repertoire. In this session Golnaz will give a brief background about the Zar and she will also share various videoclips of elements of Zar in dance and music.
RULES: Disrespectful, aggressive and rude behaviour and words will not be tolerated in any way at the event.
