Palazzo Massimo alle Terme is the main of the four sites of the National Roman Museum, together with the original headquarters of the Baths of Diocletian, and presents a broad overview of the artistic production of the Roman world, from sculptures to frescoes, from mosaics to jewelery and numismatics. It was rebuilt between Protected content Protected content the architect Camillo Pistrucci on the Montalto-Peretti villa, from Protected content became a property of the Massimo family.
The neo-Renaissance style building, near the Termini Station, houses one of the most important collections of classical art in the world, with masterpieces of Roman art, from the late Republican age (with works belonging to the ruling classes of the II-I century BC). In the rooms are also exhibited splendid Greek originals found in Rome.
The collections are distributed in the four floors of the building according to a chronological-thematic criterion: the ground floor, the first and the second floor are dedicated to the section of ancient art, with figurative works of late-republican, imperial and late-antique with Greek originals brought to Rome in ancient times; the basement houses the numismatic and goldsmith sections.
The exhibition includes the works of art of the great residences of the senatorial order, with Greek originals brought to Rome in ancient times) as well as a "section of numismatics and goldsmith" on the aspects of the Roman economy in the basement.
