The Protected content is housed in the very same building that, during the Nazi-Fascist occupation of Rome, became infamously known as a site of imprisonment and torture—a place where the SS held over 2,000 anti-fascists, many of whom were later killed at the Fosse Ardeatine.

The cells are restored to the state in which the fleeing Germans left them, and are still bearing the original graffiti scratched by those who were imprisoned there before their lives were taken.
