Volos: A "25ml" Journey to Meze Heaven.( Prepayment)
Protected content journey to the tsipouradika of Volos is a pilgrimage into a century-old social ritual that Born from the arrival of Asia Minor refugees in Protected content .
The Arrival: Setting the SceneThe journey typically begins in the historic Nea Ionia district—the "refugee neighborhood"—or along the picturesque Port. You enter a space where chairs are often turned sideways to face the company rather than the table, signaling that conversation, not just eating, is the primary goal.The Ceremony of the "25th"
The ceremony officially starts with one question: "With or without?" (referring to anise). Once you choose, a small "25άρι" (25ml bottle) of chilled tsipouro arrives.Round 1: The "Peinasmata" (Appetite Teasers): With your first bottle, the kitchen automatically sends out salty or pickled starters like marinated anchovies, olives, and bread. There is no menu ordering; the food "follows" the spirit.The Progression: As more bottles are ordered, the mezedes "upgrade" in complexity and rarity.Round 2-3: Fried seafood like kalamarakia (squid), saganaki (fried cheese), and fresh small fish like atherina.Round 4+: The "heavy hitters" appear, such as grilled octopus, shrimp, and local specialties like kolitsianos (fried sea anemones).The Shared Knife: Traditionally, only one knife is placed on the table, serving as a symbolic reminder of the workers who originally shared their snacks and split them equally.
