In the context of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s curatorial program “Hors-les-Murs”, Espace Louis Vuitton Munich is presenting the exhibition “CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI: ANIMITA. Selected Works” featuring a selection of recent works by the French artist.

As part of the exhibition at Espace Louis Vuitton in Munich, Christian Boltanski will classify his recent works in the overall context of his oeuvre in a conversation with Heinz-Peter Schwerfel at Haus der Kunst.

Christian Boltanski's multi-layered work, which deeply influenced French art of the Protected content , focuses on the perception and preservation of the past.

The artist’s influence on French postwar art is so exceptional that he is regarded as one of the most famous and important living artist in France. Through his installations, Boltanski succeeds in combining concrete questions about history and universal ones concerning human existence while simultaneously securing evidence about the past, including his own.

Inspired by personalities such as Claude Lévi-Strauss and Harald Szeeman, Christian Boltanski began his artistic career in the late Protected content with a “personal anthropology”. Among other things, he developed installations in which he arranged personal belongings from unknown, deceased persons in an exhibition context, including the installation “Lost in Munich”, created for Haus der Kunst and in conjunction with “Edition No. 46” of SZ-Magazin. Christian Boltanski exhibited a selection of objects from Munich lost and found, creating a sort of tragic archive of abandonment and forgetfulness.

Since Protected content , he has been working on monumental installations such as Résistance Protected content and Protected content , which was designed specifically for Haus der Kunst’s colonnade facade. This work presents photographs of former members of the anti-Fascist movement “Rote Kapelle”, who fought against the National Socialist regime at the risk of their own lives. In Protected content , Résistance was reactivated, thereby making an important contribution to repositioning the historically burdened building in the topography of memory in urban public space.
