No Country for Old Men? The world has changed, and it is time for King Lear to pass on his power to the next generation. But he can’t really let go – he’s too used to the privileges he has taken for granted all his life. In the face of an imminent change of power, the perspective changes: haven’t social conditions always been determined by the same people for millennia? Isn’t there an urgent need for a cold, structural revolution? Either way, the game is now determined by Lear’s daughters. It’s their turn to take responsibility for new, as yet undetermined future. How radical does the change have to be? How much time is left for doubt? Does their father have to die so that his daughters can be free? What does the future world look like? Better, worse or just different?
Thomas Melle, author of Die Welt im Rücken and author and subject of Stefan Kaegi’s “Unheimliches Tal / Uncanny Valley” at the beginning of the last season, will retranslate and rework “King Lear” for the Kammerspiele.
