Exhibition Susan Sontag

Everything matters” – Susan Sontag, the great New York intellectual, wrote this in her diary at the age of sixteen. For this brilliant essayist, writer, and culture-obsessed thinker, reading, writing, watching, acting, and living were equally essential.
The exhibition at the Literaturhaus München presents this icon of 20th-century philosophical thought in five stages, taking visitors on a journey through time – to her home city of New York and to the key people in her life.
Forming one’s own opinion, allowing oneself to be moved by art, seeing with one’s own eyes, traveling to where things happen – Susan Sontag’s radical independence, both aesthetically and politically, was the passionate core of her thinking. “The world was her subject,” wrote Paul Auster, who shared a decades-long friendship with her.
Now, she is being rediscovered by a new generation.
The exhibition features numerous – and in some cases previously unpublished – photographs, manuscripts, quotes, film clips, personal items from her estate, and an extensive accompanying program.
