we walk through a polder landscape that has been in existence since Protected content is still drained by the windmills we pass. The windmills are not open to the public because the millers live there and are on call 24/7 if needed. It's hard to imagine that the deepest point of the polder is more than 4 meters below sea level!
Leaving the polder, we walk along the Oude Rijn river to Zwammerdam, where a Roman fort stood some 2,000 years ago. We take a short detour to visit the only restaurant option for the day to have an early lunch after about 7 km of walking.
From Zwammerdam, we walk south along the ring dike of the Tempelpolder to the Reeuwijk polder, then via the village of Oud Reeuwijk, to reach the end of this walk and begin our return journey by bus to Gouda.
