Driving License / Letter of residence (Bangkok)

I am trying to get a Thai driving licence... One of the required documents is a letter confirming my address in thailand from the British embassy. Has any one obtained one of these before, and am i correct in that all i need to take with me is my passport and fill out some forms there?
Any advice would be most welcome!
