The de facto Swiss capital is a fairly compact city known for its medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, the Bärengraben (bear pit) used to house the city’s heraldic animals, and much more! With the bus and tram network, navigating your way around the city from one place to the next is simple. This also means that if you don’t want to live among the hustle and bustle of the center, you can enjoy a quieter life in one of the surrounding towns, which are just a short commute away from Bern’s center.
