As a member of the Unizo Free-lancer focus group & think tank, I was wondering if you, as an expat free-lancer, have specific concerns? Or recommandations based upon your experience in other countries?
Background: Unizo is the largest organisation representing SMEs in Belgium (85.000 mainly Flemish companies & entrepreneurs. Until recently Unizo overlooked free-lancers. The branch Love to be Free is now catching up servicing & representing the rapidly growing group of free-lancers. Myself, Master of Law having worked for both employer lobby groups & labour union, coaching start-ups & artists, having lived abroad (where admin&career switches were often so much easier) feel deeply committed to this transition within our economy. Unions are so rigid, pension right build up as an employee or civil servant cannot be transferred; discrimination between performing artists & other free-lancers; ... Mindset & regulations are shifting: the VAT threshold went up to 25.000€, there's more support, subsidies, bank warrants for starters, ... still lots of work needs to be done.
