About the City

Located in the state of Haryana near to New Delhi, Gurgaon is one of India’s leading financial and industrial centers. Since the establishment of car firm Maruti Suzuki India Limited in the city during the 1970s, Gurgaon has witnessed rapid urbanization, and now has the third highest income per capita in India. It has a population of over 1.5 million people, situated within a territory of 732 km2.

The vast majority of its population is Indian, although the rapid urbanization that took place during the second half of the 20th century brought many foreigners to the city. Furthermore, the recent addition of over 250 Fortune companies has caused many expatriates to move to Gurgaon.

The city’s official and most widely spoken language is Hindi, but English is becoming increasingly common, especially in the financial and business districts. In fact, many business deals and paperwork will be provided in both languages.

The Climate in Gurgaon

As it has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, expatriates moving to Gurgaon will need to adjust to hot, humid summers and cold, foggy winters and lots of precipitation throughout the year. The monsoon season occurs during the summer months, with most of the rain falling in July (9.114 mm) and August (10.185 mm). During the summer, which runs from April to October, the average temperature ranges between 78.6°F (25.9°C) and 103.3°F (39.6°C), with May usually the hottest month. The winter, which runs from November to January, has average temperatures of 45.1°F (7.3°C) to 82.9°F (28.3°C). January is usually the coldest month.

Visas for India

Expatriates moving to Gurgaon will need a visa. Instead of requiring expatriates to apply for both a residence visa and a work permit, they are rolled into one document: the employment visa. This visa allows both to enter the country and to work there.

In addition, once you have moved to Gurgaon using your work visa, you must also register as a resident if your work visa permits you to stay in India for more than 180 days. You need to register your presence with the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office (FRRO), and this must be done within 14 days of moving to Gurgaon. In doing so you will receive a residential permit, which confirms legally your residential status in the country. You will need to provide a copy of your work visa and other documentation, including your passport.
