Americans in Ho Chi Minh City: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life

Thinking about moving to Ho Chi Minh City as an American? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. Country-level percentages aren't broken out for Ho Chi Minh City, so the points below reflect what US American expats there wrote in their own words.

What Americans love about living in Ho Chi Minh City

  • People are warm and generous. Americans mention the friendly, generous locals most — many say it's what made settling in feel beautiful.

  • It's remarkably affordable. A low cost of living, alongside real opportunity, is a constant theme and a big part of the draw.

  • The food and coffee are a joy. Great food, excellent coffee, and easy dining and delivery via apps like Grab come up again and again.

The downsides of Ho Chi Minh City for American expats

  • Traffic is chaotic and dangerous. Congestion and reckless driving are by far the most common complaint.

  • Air quality is poor. Pollution comes up constantly, made worse by the traffic.

  • Petty crime is a concern. Theft in the neighbourhood is a recurring worry for Americans.

  • Noise and thin nature wear on people. A loud city built without easy access to green space, and slow infrastructure improvements, round out the downsides.

For Americans, Ho Chi Minh City offers warm people, great food, and an affordable, opportunity-rich life. The trade-offs are the traffic, the air quality, and the noise. It rewards those who come for the energy and the value and can roll with a chaotic megacity.

Why Americans move abroad … (and do they like it?)

We’ve rounded up key facts about the typical American expat: what motivated them to move to a new country, what they enjoy about life abroad, as well as what they struggle with the most.
