Americans in Istanbul: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life
Thinking about moving to Istanbul as an American? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what US American expats in Istanbul wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.
What Americans love about living in Istanbul
-
The culture, food, and history are extraordinary. Istanbul scores 74% for culinary variety, and Americans describe a fascinating history and a rich, layered culture.
-
It's affordable on a foreign salary. A US income stretches a long way, and Americans describe a low cost of living for the quality of life they get.
-
It's a launchpad for travel. 81% of expats in Istanbul rate the opportunity to travel positively, with cheap, easy access to countless countries.
-
The nature and transport impress. 87% rate the natural environment positively and 86% the availability of public transportation.

The downsides of Istanbul for American expats
-
The economy is the biggest strain. Just 16% of expats in Istanbul rate the state of the economy positively and 16% the general cost of living, amid high inflation.
-
The language gates daily life. Only 27% find it easy to get by without Turkish, and few locals speak English, making the city stressful to navigate.
-
Politics and the welcome can feel cool. Only 33% rate political stability positively and 51% rate friendliness, with nationalism and repression coming up.
-
Getting things done is hard. Only 18% find bureaucracy easy, and Americans mention crowds, smoking, and litter as everyday frictions.

For Americans, Istanbul offers extraordinary culture, food, history, and travel at a price a foreign salary handles easily. The trade-offs are the economy, the language, and the political mood. It rewards those who come for the richness of the place and can navigate the friction.
Why Americans move abroad … (and do they like it?)
Every year, we publish one of the biggest global surveys for expats — Expat Insider — where we ask people living around the world about every aspect of expat life. We’ve rounded up key facts about the typical American expat: what motivated them to move to a new country, what they enjoy about life abroad, as well as what they struggle with the most.
