• The language gates daily life. Only 27% find it easy to get by without Turkish, and few locals speak English, making the city stressful to navigate.

• Politics and the welcome can feel cool. Only 33% rate political stability positively and 51% rate friendliness, with nationalism and repression coming up.

• Getting things done is hard. Only 18% find bureaucracy easy, and Americans mention crowds, smoking, and litter as everyday frictions.

For Americans, Istanbul offers extraordinary culture, food, history, and travel at a price a foreign salary handles easily. The trade-offs are the economy, the language, and the political mood. It rewards those who come for the richness of the place and can navigate the friction.
