What to Expect from Expat Life in Sarajevo?

From the terrible events of the war-torn 1990s to the recent flooding crisis, Bosnia-Herzegovina has endured a lot. The capital, Sarajevo, is no exception, but the people of this beautiful Balkan city are resilient, enterprising and determined not to be defined by tragedy. Surrounded by the stunning natural landscapes of the Dinaric Alps and the Miljacka River, Sarajevo's city center brings together a striking blend of cultures, with deeply ingrained Islamic, Orthodox, Judaic and Catholic communities coexisting peacefully alongside an increasingly cosmopolitan generation of young Bosnians populating the city's bars, restaurants and nightclubs alongside visiting tourists and enterprising expats. Many foreigners who come to Sarajevo are either in relationships with Bosnian citizens or working for various NGOs and international organizations. Business opportunities also exist, in particular in the computing and technology industries, and the government has done much to attract foreign investment in recent years. There are still many challenges to overcome, but expats with an open mind and a thirst for adventure are likely to find life in Sarajevo inspiring and highly rewarding.

InterNations is the largest global network for expatriates, with communities in 420 cities around the world.
