Romanians in Vienna: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life

Thinking about moving to Vienna as a Romanian? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what Romanian expats in Vienna wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.

What Romanians love about living in Vienna

  • Public transport is the best there is. Vienna tops the survey here — 98% of expats rate the availability of public transportation positively, with 91% rating getting around on foot or by bike.

  • It's clean, green, and safe. 96% rate the natural environment positively, 78% air quality, and 86% personal safety, in a calm, organised city.

  • Quality of life is high. Romanians describe a big step up from home — good work-life balance, strong education, and 78% rating healthcare affordability positively.

  • It's central and cultured. 92% rate the opportunity to travel positively, and there's always somewhere new to discover on a night out.

The downsides of Vienna for Romanian expats

  • The language gates work and social life. Just 22% of expats in Vienna say German is easy to learn, and Romanians say it's hard to find a job — or make friends — without it.

  • Locals can feel cold and impolite. Only 36% rate friendliness positively, 28% say making local friends is easy, and 44% feel welcome, with some describing rudeness in shops and on transport.

  • Careers can stall. Only 47% say the move improved their career prospects and 43% rate the local job market positively.

  • Admin is slow and costs add up. Only 37% find bureaucracy easy, and the general cost of living rates 44%.

“The language barrier makes it very difficult or impossible to find a job if you don't speak German, and the people are very traditional and unfriendly.” — Romanian expat in Vienna
Opinion

For Romanians, Vienna offers world-beating transport, safety, clean air, and a real step up in quality of life. The catch is social and linguistic: German gates both work and friendships, and locals can be cool. It rewards those who commit to the language and value order over an easy welcome.
