SHOWCASE – Künstlerbücher (artist books)
Under the title SHOWCASE, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek presents selected exhibits from its Protected content diverse, and international high-ranking collection of artist books. SHOWCASE refers to the presentation of the books in showcases that is characteristic for an exhibition in this library. The title also indicates that these contemporary works of art are collected and displayed as a "show", but also as a "case", an example in the sense of the targeted expansion of a collection special to a scientific universal library.
SHOWCASE is committed to the effective and effective use of the dynamics and manifold significance of these books, which artists consciously choose as their form of expression. It shows how different artists use the medium book, how different artist books look, how they differ in presentation, materiality and value. Cost-effective production and bulk goods can also be an artist's book, as are costly, bibliophile-looking books. The artists pursue not only aesthetic demands with their ideas and new solutions. They turn to society in new language and new forms of representation, also with political objectives. Their urge to change is reflected in the subculture of comics and zines.
Over 70 exhibits can be seen in three exhibition rooms. The virtual preview gives an initial insight into the exhibition and exhibits.
There will be a public guided tour at 14:00 h
after visiting the exhibition we could have a café or drink at CADU close by.
