Bregenzer Festspiele 2019 - Rigoletto (on TV)
In Protected content Verdi's opera classic "Rigoletto" premiered on the floating stage on Lake Constance. 3sat is showing the recording of the new production by Philipp Stölzl from the Bregenz Festival.
Stölzl emphasizes Verdi's unique contrasts between spectacle and intimate chamber play. The circus hustle and bustle at the festival, the kidnapping and the nightly storm are contrasted by intimate scenes between father and daughter and Gilda and the Duke.
With the possibility of staging on the floating stage, a long-cherished dream comes true for Stölzl. His music videos for the Rammstein group made him famous, and he created breathtaking scenes in films. As an opera director he celebrated successes at the Salzburg Festival, at the Theater an der Wien and at the State Operas in Berlin and Dresden.
As a court jester, Rigoletto is amused by the free life of his duke, whom he actively supports in his conquests. His laughter at the angry Monterone, who sees his daughter dishonored by the Duke, stuck in his throat when he cursed him. Without his knowledge, Rigoletto becomes an accomplice in the kidnapping of his own daughter Gilda, whom he keeps locked up at home. She sees a way out of her father's care in the Duke's care. But the latter has hired a murderer to put an end to the Duke's egoistic love affairs. But when Rigoletto wants to throw the wrapped corpse into the water, he hears his cynical credo "La donna è mobile
