Die Vögel - livestream
The live stream has been rescheduled to tomorrow, Oct. 31st.
It has become proverbial: the "cloud cuckoo land" of the ancient comedy The Birds by Aristophanes. With unsurpassable hubris, the birds believe that they can mess with the gods and build their own powerful state that is supposed to let the gods starve to death. What a mistake - presumptuous and ridiculous-laughable at the same time, with a bitter end for the rebels.
For the composer Walter Braunfels, the premiere of his adaptation of the ancient material in Munich in Protected content the great breakthrough. A huge success that was followed by 50 performances in Munich alone! His version is independent and idiosyncratic: Braunfels adds a deeply romantic touch to the work, despite its comedy character. Braunfels understands the new animal community not only politically, but also artistically and enthusiastically: The failure of the new state is not only due to the lust for power, but also to a misleading idealization. The ancient myth is reflected in the sad experiences from a world of yesterday. For Braunfels, the ruins of the First World War are everywhere visible signs of political and spiritual decay, his opera is a final emphatic rebellion against the ruptures of the present. After a hundred years, the first new production will follow at the site of the premiere.
