The Bavarian State Library safeguards and preserves countless masterpieces of humanity's written and visual cultural heritage in its stacks and vaults: exquisite manuscripts—14 of which are part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

Due to strict conservation requirements, these treasures are only very rarely on public display. For StabiLiebling, the Bavarian State Library opens its vaults and presents a masterpiece from its collections in its treasure chamber on two days each month. Even though all the works shown can be viewed in detail in the library's digital collections, these digital copies cannot replace the aura of the originals.

**Die Große Welle von Hokusai will be presented on 14th and 15th october

The "Great Wave" is an icon of art; its motif is world-famous, and its interpretation multifaceted. In the background, the sacred Mount Fuji rests, while in the foreground, a massive wave appears poised to break over fishing boats. The image has been interpreted as an embodiment of both the beauty and the destructive power of nature, as a metaphor for the transience of human life, and as a symbol of Western encroachment upon Japan.

The "Great Wave" stands as impressive proof of Hokusai’s artistic mastery. It served as a source of inspiration for artists associated with Impressionism, Japonisme, and other modern art movements. Today, it is not only considered Japan’s most famous work of art but also a global icon.
