Boston has a small German sample, so the themes below draw on what German expats in Boston and across the US wrote in their own words — read it as a friendly snapshot rather than the last word. • Career opportunities are the biggest draw. Germans in Boston write about jobs in pharma, research, and academia, and across the US, about two-thirds (67%) of expats say the move improved their career prospects. Work is often what brings them over in the first place: German expats worldwide are almost twice as likely as the global average to be sent abroad by an employer (14% vs. 8%).

• Everyday life feels uncomplicated. Germans describe Boston as easy to live in and low on friction, and expats in the US rate the practical basics highly — 91% say it's easy to pay without cash and 89% are happy with high-speed internet at home.

• People are relaxed and easy to approach. Germans mention an easygoing first contact and a low-hierarchy, can-do attitude at work, and about two-thirds of expats in the US (65%) rate the general friendliness of local residents positively.

• The rest of the country is there to explore. Road trips, national parks, and long weekends come up often — 77% of expats in the US rate the opportunity to travel positively and 82% rate the natural environment positively.

• Costs are the number-one complaint. Germans in Boston call the cost of living extremely high, and across the US only about a quarter of expats rate the general cost of living (28%) or housing affordability (25%) positively.

• Getting around is a hassle. Traffic, expensive parking, and public transport that isn't a real alternative come up again and again — just 40% of expats in the US rate the availability of public transportation positively.

• Healthcare costs worry people. This is the lowest-scoring part of life in the US in 2026: only about one in six expats (17%) rate healthcare affordability positively.

• Politics and priorities feel far from home. Germans mention polarization, gun laws, and a casual attitude toward energy use and recycling. About a third (34%) of expats in the US rate political stability positively, and a similar share (34%) think the government supports policies to protect the environment.

• Friendships stay on the surface. Germans describe warm first contact but few deep connections, and only 37% of expats in the US say making local friends is easy.

For Germans, Boston is a career city first: the jobs, the research scene, and the easy day-to-day are what people write about. The trade-offs are what it costs to live there, the commute, and how long it takes to turn friendly small talk into real friendships. If you're coming for the work and can handle the price tag, it's a rewarding place to land.
