I am moving to Malta in a couple of months and I am undecided whether to sell my car in Switzerland (where I reside) or bring it over to Malta. I have noticed that the Registration Tax to get the Maltese plate is extremely high. The website ( Protected content ) I have browsed seems to refer only to used cars coming from abroad and in need of a Maltese registration. It might be more convenient to buy a second hand car in Malta and sell my current car in Switzerland rather than bringing it over. I would be grateful if anyone could advise whether a registration tax is also due when a car is purchase in Malta in the second hand market. I assume that the registration tax is due when buying a brand new car - but please advise if I am mistaken.
