Italians in Munich: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life

Thinking about moving to Munich as an Italian? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what Italian expats in Munich wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.

What Italians love about living in Munich

  • Careers and stability. Italians praise the job market and job security, with 48% of expats in Munich rating the local job market positively (above the 38% global average) and a stable, supportive government.

  • It's safe and low on crime. 91% of expats in Munich rate personal safety positively, in a city Italians describe as orderly and child-friendly.

  • Everything works. Efficient public administration, honest institutions, and 84% rating public transport positively make daily life smooth.

  • Nature and travel are close. 96% rate the natural environment positively and 95% the opportunity to travel, with the Alps and Europe on the doorstep.

The downsides of Munich for Italian expats

  • Housing and costs are steep. Just 8% of expats in Munich rate housing affordability positively and 15% the general cost of living, and finding a flat is hard.

  • The weather and distance from the sea weigh on Italians. Only 45% rate the climate positively, and being far from the coast, with slow, pricey connections to Italy, is a recurring theme.

  • Locals can feel rigid and hard to befriend. Only 19% say making local friends is easy and 38% rate friendliness positively, and Italians miss the service culture and social warmth of home.

  • The food and language take adjusting. Missing Italian food comes up often, and just 20% find German easy to learn.

For Italians, Munich offers safety, strong careers, efficiency, and a well-run life with nature close by. The trade-offs are the cost of living, grey weather far from the sea, and a rigid social scene. It rewards those who come for stability and career over lifestyle and warmth.

One major issue is racism. You can be integrated but never included in the society because you'll never be a German (even if you get the citizenship).
