• The weather and clean air win people over. 82% of expats in Portugal rate the climate and weather positively (vs. 58% globally) and 85% air quality.

• It feels safe and calm. Portugal earns one of the survey's highest safety scores (94%), and the French describe a gentle, peaceful pace.

• Locals are warm and costs are manageable. 79% rate the friendliness of local residents positively, 76% feel welcome, and 61% rate the general cost of living positively (vs. 39% globally).

• Nature and the coast are close. 90% rate the natural environment positively and 89% say it's easy to get around on foot or by bike.

• Bureaucracy is the biggest gripe by far. Just 20% of expats in Portugal find it easy to deal with local authorities, against 38% globally.

• The language takes work. Only 24% say Portuguese is easy to learn, which slows down daily admin.

• Work and pay are thin. Just 19% rate the local job market positively and 29% say the move improved their career prospects (vs. 55% globally).

• Healthcare access can disappoint. Some French expats describe difficulty getting timely public care and falling back on private clinics.

For the French, Portugal delivers sun, safety, friendly people, and a calm life at a manageable cost, close to home. The trade-offs are bureaucratic and practical: red tape, a new language, and thin job prospects. For lifestyle over career, few places score better.
