• It's green, safe, and well-run. 91% say the government protects the environment, 87% rate the economy positively, and 52% find bureaucracy easy.

• Culture and getting around are easy. 89% rate public transport positively, and Americans praise the museums, public art, and easy travel.

• Making local friends is very hard. Just 15% of expats in Stockholm say it's easy — the lowest kind of score in the survey — and only 38% rate friendliness positively.

• The culture can feel conformist. Americans describe a robotic pressure to conform, with individuality less valued than back home.

• Winters are long and dark. Only 45% rate the climate and weather positively.

• Bureaucracy and costs can bite. Americans describe a closed, unforgiving bureaucracy, with housing (28%) and the cost of living (38%) a strain.

For Americans, Stockholm offers clean air, deep nature, and a life built around health, family, and balance. The catch is social and seasonal: reserved locals, a conformist streak, and long dark winters. Overall happiness (64%) sits below the global average, mostly on friendliness.
