Thinking about moving to Sweden as an American? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what an American expats in Sweden wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.

• Clean air and nature are everywhere. The environment is a top draw — 96% of expats in Sweden rate the natural environment positively and 91% rate air quality positively, against a global average of 65%.

• Work-life balance and family support stand out. Americans praise the social structures around family and time off, and green priorities run deep (86% say the government protects the environment, vs. 62% globally).

• Healthcare and admin are easy to deal with. 82% rate healthcare affordability positively (vs. 61% globally), and 51% find bureaucracy easy — above the 38% global average.

• You can get by in English. Sweden is unusually easy for newcomers: 60% say it's easy to live there without the local language, against 48% globally.

• Making local friends is very hard. This is the loudest complaint — just 16% of expats in Sweden say it's easy, the lowest kind of score in the survey, against 39% globally.

• Winters are long, dark, and cold. Only 39% rate the climate and weather positively (vs. 58% globally), and the darkness wears on people.

• Careers and the job market can disappoint. Just 32% rate the local job market positively and 47% say the move improved their career prospects.

• Locals can feel reserved. Friendliness rates 45% and feeling welcome 46%, both below global averages.

For Americans, Sweden offers clean air, deep nature, and a society built around balance and family. The catch is social and seasonal: reserved locals, long dark winters, and a tough job market. Tellingly, expats there rate overall happiness below the global average (56% vs. 70%), and the gap is mostly about friendliness and weather.
