In Latinx: The New Force in Politics and Culture (Verso, Protected content , Ed Morales considers the ways in which Latinx identity disrupts binary thinking about race in the United States. Drawing on this research, Morales speaks with media scholar and curator Chon A. Noriega about Latinx history and culture in the U.S., as well as the evolution of the term Latinx and its relevance in the arts today.
This conversation is the first of three events in a yearlong series at the Whitney focused on new scholarship about Latinx art and culture.
Ed Morales author, poet, and journalist who has written for The Nation, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Jacobin, and The Guardian. He is the author of Living in Spanglish (St. Martins, Protected content , The Latin Beat: From Rumba to Rock (Da Capo Press, Protected content , and Fantasy Island: Colonialism, Exploitation, and the Betrayal of Puerto Rico (Bold Type Press, Protected content . He teaches at Columbia University’s Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
Chon A. Noriega is a professor in UCLA’s Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media and an adjunct curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He is the author of Shot in America: Television, the State, and the Rise of Chicano Cinema (University of Minnesota Press, Protected content has edited numerous books.
