Kenyans in Doha: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life
Thinking about moving to Doha as a Kenyan? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2024 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what Kenyan expats in Doha wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.
What Kenyans love about living in Doha
-
It's safe and orderly. 92% of expats in Doha rate personal safety positively, and Kenyans praise well-run, efficient government institutions and no police harassment.
-
Getting around is easy and cheap. 92% rate the availability of public transportation positively, with free metro buses, cheap trains, and air conditioning everywhere.
-
Healthcare and the economy are strong. 72% rate healthcare affordability positively, 88% the quality of medical care, and 84% the state of the economy.
-
The culture is a highlight. Kenyans enjoy interacting with many nationalities and embracing the local Arabic culture — some call Qatar a second home.

The downsides of Doha for Kenyan expats
-
Jobs can be harder to land for Kenyans. A recurring theme is that opportunities feel more limited by nationality than qualifications.
-
Worker treatment and pay concern people. Kenyans mention poor housing and low pay for some workers, and salaries that don't match the effort.
-
The summer heat is punishing. Just 32% rate the climate and weather positively.
-
Costs and happiness lag. Housing (27%) and the general cost of living (30%) rate low, and overall happiness (58%) sits below the global average of 68%.

For Kenyans, Doha offers safety, order, cheap transport, good healthcare, and a rich culture in a peaceful base. The trade-offs are hiring that can hinge on nationality, the heat, and the cost of living. It rewards those who come with a solid role and a plan to save.
