Employment in Breda

Local Economy in Breda

Retail is an important part of the local economy in Breda. There is a large retail presence in the city, but industry is featured highly too, as many international security companies have made their bases on the outskirts of the city. The economy of Breda has stabilized over the last few years although there are concerns that with an ageing population there will be a worker shortfall in coming years, hence the encouragement of new residents into the workforce.

The spearhead sectors for Breda are recognized as logistics, care, the creative/visual Industry and education. These industries accounted for 47% of the city’s workforce in 2013. The recent introduction of an international airport has increased the amount of traffic into the area and business travel is on the increase. The long term plan for the city can be found online.

Work Permits for Breda

Expats moving to Breda from another EU or EEA country do not need a work permit, they will however need to register for their citizen service number to keep their employment records up to date. Expats relocating from outside the EU will need a permit to work in the city. Some highly skilled workers, new graduates, and those joining a relative who has permission to work do not have to apply. Residence status and work permits are closely linked throughout the Netherlands and from April 2014 a single dual purpose visa is available. If you are going to be working in Breda for an employer and your stay will be for less than four months, your employer will have to submit your details to the Dutch immigration authorities. For more details on work permits for Breda visit the Immigration and Naturalization Service website.

Job Hunting in Breda

Those looking for work in Breda have a number of options. One option is to visit the local job center at the Werkplein, provided you are already in Breda. Here the Municipality of Breda and the work placement branch of the Employee Insurance Agency work closely to find the right candidate for the right vacancy. Expats will receive advice, coaching and access to a large database of jobs in the area.

The internet is a commonly used method of job hunting across Europe but there are a number of well-known recruitment agencies across the city where you can register your details. There are also a number of English speaking newspapers with job advertisements in Breda, but these are normally for higher ranking positions. If you are an expat looking for a less qualified job, the Werkplein is the best route. Contact them on +31 (0)76 7511410.
