Why Americans move abroad … (and do they like it?)

Every year, we publish one of the biggest global surveys for expats — Expat Insider — where we ask people living around the world about every aspect of expat life. We’ve rounded up key facts about the typical American expat: what motivated them to move to a new country, what they enjoy about life abroad, as well as what they struggle with the most.

What our American expats have to say about living in Lisbon

We asked tens of thousands of expats about their lives abroad in our Expat Insider surveys. In addition to our standard questions, we invite them to share what they like or dislike about their experiences in their own words. Here, we’ve selected some of the most interesting or representative quotes about expat life in Lisbon from American expats, grouped into positive and negative opinions.

Let’s start with the positive ones.

What I love is that Portugal is vastly safer than the US and the cost of living is about half, or less. the private healthcare is substantially better and cheaper. The country has a relaxed and easy going vibe.. the food and wine are very good, especially the seafood. the country is green and scenic and the beaches are stunning. I will not likely ever permanently leave Portugal.

What makes life in Lisbon enjoyable for me is an easy life for a retired person; a simpler and more relaxing life, without the stress of us politics and increasing gun violence in the united states.

One aspect I find challenging about Lisbon is the bureaucracy, as well as occasional inefficiency and lack of professionalism in some workplaces. I’ve also noticed a slower pace and less emphasis on ambition or striving for excellence compared to other places.

What I dislike about Lisbon is the high cost of energy (petrol and electricity), the lack of properly insulated houses in winter, and the poor air quality due to diesel emissions, which makes outdoor activities difficult. Additionally, drivers often speed and can be unpredictably unsafe.
