Is Mexico a good move for Germans? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what German expats in Mexico wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.

• The weather is the first thing Germans mention. Sunshine and warmth come up in almost every answer, and 84% of expats in Mexico rate the climate and weather positively, against a global average of 58%.

• The food wins people over. Mexican cooking is a constant theme, and 92% of expats in Mexico rate culinary variety and dining options positively — the second-highest score of the 31 countries in the 2026 survey.

• Locals are warm, and friendships happen fast. 84% rate the friendliness of local residents positively, 87% feel welcome, and 73% say making local friends is easy — nearly twice the global average of 39%.

• Life feels lighter than at home. Culture, travel, and an easy pace draw praise, and 85% of expats in Mexico are happy with their life abroad, against 70% globally.

• Safety is the biggest worry by far. Insecurity and crime come up most, and 68% of expats in Mexico rate personal safety positively — below the global average of 81%.

• Corruption and red tape frustrate. Only 29% find it easy to deal with local authorities (vs. 38% globally), and political stability rates 45%.

• Air quality and noise take getting used to. Pollution is recurring in the cities, and 46% rate air quality positively, against 65% globally.

• Careers are the weak spot. Just 40% rate the local job market positively and 48% say the move improved their career prospects (vs. 55% globally).

For Germans, Mexico delivers warm weather, warm people, great food, and a social life that comes together quickly. The trade-offs are safety, bureaucracy, and a job market that rewards people who already have income or work remotely. If you're moving for the life rather than the career, few places score better.
