The pros and cons of living in Prague
No place is absolutely perfect. There’s always the good, the bad and the ugly — read about what our British members love about Prague as well as the challenges they face.
Pros:
Healthcare: Both the affordability and the quality of healthcare in Prague gets high marks from our British community.
Public Transport: The public transport in Prague is efficient and one of the best in Europe. You can take either a train, bus, or tram at cheap prices.
Social scene: Prague has a great social scene due to the large number of internationals. There’s a large variety of pubs and restaurants to choose from.
Outdoor activities: Since the country is bordered by mountains you have many options from cycling or hiking in the summer to cross-country skiing in the winter.
Low crime rates: Prague is a safe city with a low crime rate. Walking around the city alone is no problem. Yet one should keep their eyes open for pickpockets.
Cons:
Wages: Local wages certainly don’t compare to the levels our British members are used to but the lower cost of living makes up for it in most cases.
Language barrier: Without basic knowledge of Czech navigating activities such as city registration and finding housing can be difficult. It also won’t be as easy to connect with the locals.
Poor customer service: A trend noted amongst expats. Many claim service is quite poor. However, this seems to be the norm as locals don’t mind.

Making friends and building a network in a new city can be hard. At our events everyone is from somewhere else and it’s completely normal to introduce yourself to people and ask them about their own expat journey. If you’re into the idea of bumping into other Brits in a bar, you can try your luck with places like The Dubliners, a sports bar that shows major footballs games. This also applies to the Irish pubs Bitter Bar and Rockey O’Reilly’s.
For less of a hassle, you can make friends when attending specific events for Brits or expats in general. Our InterNations events are a great opportunity to meet Brits and other English-speaking expats in Prague. Especially our Newcomers’ Events that are geared towards introducing newcomers to the community, which makes finding your first friends a whole lot easier than trying your luck in a bar.
As with most expats, quite a few of our British members live in the more international parts of town. Both international companies and opportunities for socializing tend to be located in the center of the city. Here are some of the most popular parts of Prague:
Prague 2, Vinhorady: This is most popular neighborhood for expats. It’s centrally located with many parks, bars, and restaurants.
Prague 6: Popular among expats because of the international school and embassies present.
Prague 1: The most touristic part of the city, filled with history, culture, and activities.
Prague is a very international city that receives a substantial number of international tourists every year. So it’s not too hard to get around with no to very limited language skills. However, this will become limiting at some point. You’ll run into the proverbial language barrier, and it’ll be frustrating. Especially if you’re trying to get official paperwork done, find a flat, see a doctor, etc.
So ideally, you treat your time in Prague as an opportunity to learn some Czech. There is a wide variety of affordable language schools to get you started, and of course, there are many apps that allow you to improve on your own time and budget.
