Life in Cannes

Culture and Leisure

Cannes is regarded as one of the cultural centers of France, and is most famous for the Cannes International Film Festival, which is held in May every year. However, the city is also home to many cultural institutions, including the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Provence, a local art museum, and Musée de la Castre, which has historical artefacts from around the world. There is also lots of famous, historical architecture, including the villas in the city itself, and religious buildings located on the small islands just off the coast.

Education in Cannes

France has a public school system that is free for all foreigners and expatriates, provided that they can prove their residence in the country. However, as French is the language of instruction, many expatriates living in Cannes choose to send their children to English-speaking international schools. At present, Cannes only has one international school, Middle School International, but there are many highly regarded international schools located in nearby Nice, including the International School of Nice and Mougins School, both of which would be suitable for the children of expatriates living in Cannes. Cannes has one institute of higher education, the Cannes-Université, but the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis is located in Nice.

Transportation in Cannes

Expatriates and foreigners living in Cannes will be able to drive legally, using either an EU driving license or an international driving permit, without requiring a French license. However, Cannes also has a public transportation network, comprised of local, intercity, and suburban bus services, and trains from Gare de Cannes, which has TGV connections to other French cities, as well as Basel, Rome, Venice, Milan, and Brussels. There is a ferry from Nice that runs to Bastia and Calvi in Corsica. The main international airport is Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, which is located around 24 km (15 miles) from the city, whilst Cannes — Mandelieu Airport and Marseille Provence Airport are located nearby.
