Americans in Singapore: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life

Thinking about moving to Singapore as an American? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what US American expats in Singapore wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.

What Americans love about living in Singapore

  • It's safe, clean, and superbly run. Standout scores: 98% of expats in Singapore rate personal safety positively, 96% public transport, and 96% getting around on foot or by bike — Americans single out no guns and no crime.

  • Careers and the economy are world-class. 96% rate the state of the economy positively, 92% political stability, and 80% say the move improved their career prospects.

  • Healthcare quality and schools stand out. 90% rate the quality of medical care positively, and Americans praise the great schools and clean, safe environment for kids.

  • It's a food-loving travel hub. Delicious, affordable food and easy weekend travel across Asia come up constantly, with Singapore scoring 100% for the opportunity to travel.

The downsides of Singapore for American expats

  • Housing and costs are brutal. Just 8% of expats in Singapore rate housing affordability positively and 20% the general cost of living, with rents a constant strain.

  • Work-life balance suffers. Only 50% are happy with their work-life balance, and Americans mention a phone-tethered, always-on culture.

  • Healthcare is expensive. Only 29% rate healthcare affordability positively, and Americans flag poorly organised insurance.

  • Belonging can be slow. Only 32% say making local friends is easy, and some report coolness toward non-Singaporeans.

One thing I do not like about Singapore is that it can be very, very boring, with not much to do other than shopping. — US American expat in Singapore

What I struggle with most in Singapore is the artificial divide between locals and foreigners. Foreigners often pay a premium for services, face significant barriers to local schools and universities, and can even be charged more for utilities and services. There is an assumption that expats earn more, so they are often expected to pay more. — US American expat in Singapore

The ridiculously high cost of living, and the extremely high cost of rent. — US American expat in Singapore

For Americans, Singapore is safe, efficient, and unbeatable for careers, healthcare quality, and a clean, family-friendly life. The trade-offs are punishing housing and healthcare costs and a demanding work culture. Many say they'd never go back — if they can afford it.

Why Americans move abroad … (and do they like it?)

Every year, we publish one of the biggest global surveys for expats — Expat Insider — where we ask people living around the world about every aspect of expat life. We’ve rounded up key facts about the typical American expat: what motivated them to move to a new country, what they enjoy about life abroad, as well as what they struggle with the most.
