• The food and nightlife are unbeatable. Bangkok scores 93% for culinary variety and 92% for culture and nightlife, and Americans rave about the street food and endless things to do.

• Your money goes much further. 76% of expats in Bangkok rate the general cost of living positively (vs. 40% globally) and 63% housing affordability, buying a high quality of life.

• People are warm and life is balanced. 82% rate locals as friendly and 75% are happy with their work-life balance, against a global average of 60%.

• It's a hub for travel and healthcare. 93% rate the opportunity to travel across Southeast Asia positively and 84% the quality of medical care.

• Air quality is the biggest problem. Just 8% of expats in Bangkok rate air quality positively — one of the lowest scores anywhere — driven by traffic and seasonal crop burning.

• Traffic and getting around frustrate. Congestion is relentless, and only 65% rate getting around on foot or by bike positively.

• Bureaucracy and politics wear on people. Just 18% find dealing with authorities easy and 37% rate political stability positively.

• Careers and the language are hard. Only 34% rate the local job market positively, and just 16% say Thai is easy to learn.

For Americans, Bangkok offers extraordinary food, a low cost of living, warm people, and a balanced, well-connected life. The trade-offs are the air quality, the traffic, and the paperwork. It suits those who come for the lifestyle and can plan around the burning season.
