Employment in Cincinnati

The Local Economy in Cincinnati

Cincinnati was once nicked ‘Porkopolis’ due to its dominance in the United States pork processing industry. Today several Fortune 100 companies choose to make their home in the city, including soap manufacturer Procter & Gamble, Macy’s Inc. and several steel, chemical and retail giants.

The city was not as affected by the Great Depression as many other larger American cities due its significant waterways, which could be used for commercial transportation. This means Cincinnati has not had the roller coaster slumps and dips in their local economy and has not been subject to great waves of regeneration. The city also enjoys year on year economic growth, which leads to the creation of new jobs and opportunities for residents and those wishing to relocate, particularly in the services industries such as transportation and hospitality.

This growth is happily paired with the fact that the cost of renting a home in Cincinnati is well below the national average. Also as a result of a major tax reform in 2010, Cincinnati is named as the city with the lowest business taxes in the Midwest.

Education is also very important for Cincinnati’s economy, with The University of Cincinnati the city’s largest employer. There are numerous schemes and work grants available for those wishing to set up their own business and support is offered through both governmental and independent organizations.

Work Permits for Cincinnati

If you’re looking to work in Cincinnati and are relocating from outside of the United States, you will need a visa that includes a work permit. Your visa application will ask you state whether you are applying to work as a temporary or permanent resident. Relevant information can be found from the United States Immigration and Visa office in person or online and also from your nearest US embassy or consulate. Your current or future employer, if you have one, will be able to assist you with this process.

Work permit and visa processing can take some time, so make sure you apply well ahead of schedule. It is important to remember that the United States is one of the most popular destinations to work in the world and this can affect timescales and processing accordingly.

Job Hunting in Cincinnati

You may be transferring to a new job or role in Cincinnati, or you may wish to find employment in order to get a work-based visa. If the latter is the case then there are many useful options to start your job search.

The best method of looking for a job in Cincinnati is to check job postings online from general international sites that have a Cincinnati local section, such Indeed or Monster. There is also a comprehensive and dedicated Cincinnati job section in The Cincinnati Enquirer. This can be viewed online or via the print edition. If you have a specific industry or employer in mind it is also worth buying or subscribing to the industry specific journal.
