There are so many expats in the UAE, but the InterNations Dubai Ramadan dinners brought some wonderful guests together.

Dubai is such an overwhelming mixture of tradition and modernity that I was very grateful for all the support from other expats.

Kenyans in Dubai: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life

Thinking about moving to Dubai as a Kenyan? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what Kenyan expats in Dubai wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.

What Kenyans love about living in Dubai

  • Safety is the standout, especially for women. Kenyans mention feeling safe most, and 96% of expats in Dubai rate personal safety positively, against a global average of 81%.

  • Careers and tax-free pay draw people in. 93% rate the state of the economy positively and 81% say the move improved their career prospects, with a tax-free income.

  • It's cheap to get around and easy to travel. Kenyans praise low-cost transport and a low-tax base, with 91% rating the opportunity to travel positively.

  • It's diverse and international. Meeting people from all over the world and 87% rating culture and nightlife positively round out the appeal.

The downsides of Dubai for Kenyan expats

  • Finding work can be a long grind. Kenyans describe months of job hunting, and salaries that don't always match the workload.

  • Africans can face a colder welcome. A recurring theme is unfriendliness and hiring bias toward Africans in particular.

  • Your visa is tied to your job. Lose the job and you lose the right to stay, which Kenyans describe as a constant uncertainty.

  • The summer heat and costs bite. Only 48% rate the climate and weather positively, with high utility bills and healthcare wait times.

For Kenyans, Dubai offers exceptional safety, tax-free pay, and an easy, international base with cheap travel. The trade-offs are a tough job hunt, a cooler welcome for Africans, and a visa that hinges on staying employed. It rewards those who arrive with a role lined up.
