French Expats in Sweden: The Pros & Cons of Expat Life

Is Sweden a good move for French expats? These pros and cons come from the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey, in which thousands of expats around the world share what they like and don't like about life abroad each year. The points below reflect what French expats in Sweden wrote in their own words, backed up by survey percentages from all expats living there.

What the French love about living in Sweden

  • Nature and clean air are everywhere. The environment tops the list — 96% of expats in Sweden rate the natural environment positively and 91% air quality (vs. 65% globally).

  • Life is balanced and well-organised. Work-life balance and a modern, orderly society draw praise, with 51% finding bureaucracy easy (vs. 38% globally).

  • Healthcare and the economy are strong. 82% rate healthcare affordability positively and 76% the state of the economy.

  • You can get by in English. 60% say it's easy to live there without the local language, against 48% globally.

The downsides of Sweden for French expats

  • Making local friends is very hard. Just 16% of expats in Sweden say it's easy — the lowest kind of score in the survey, against 39% globally.

  • Winters are long and dark. Only 39% rate the climate and weather positively, and the darkness is a real adjustment.

  • Locals can feel reserved. Friendliness rates 45% and feeling welcome 46%, both below global averages.

  • Food and careers can disappoint. The French miss the food culture (culinary variety rates 65%), and the job market rates 32%.

For the French, Sweden offers clean air, deep nature, and a balanced, well-run society. The catch is social and seasonal: reserved locals and long dark winters. Overall happiness (56%) sits below the global average of 70%, mostly on friendliness and weather.
