Employment in Charlotte

Local Economy

Charlotte is one of America’s major financial centers and the third fastest growing city in the country. The city is home to an impressive eight Fortune 500 company headquarters, including Duke Energy, Sonic Automotive and Family Dollar.

Next to this, one of the most prominent sectors in Charlotte’s economy is the motorsports industry. Three-fourths of the drivers, employees and trainers of NASCAR are based in the city, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame can be found there, too.

After New York, it is the second largest banking district in the USA, with huge international banks such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo based in the city. Because of this, work for expats may be easier to come by in Charlotte than in other US cities. Foreigners with a financial background could find suitable employment, and employees of one of the many worldwide banking corporations may be able to arrange an employment transfer to Charlotte.

Job Hunting in Charlotte

Expats are able to employ a large range of resources to help find work in Charlotte. In order to find a job from overseas before relocating to the city, it is best to concentrate on building business connections rather than search for job vacancies. Networking sites such as LinkedIn are a good way for foreigners to make their skills and experiences known and perhaps secure an employment invitation for Charlotte.

For expats already living there, there are several online job sites which make finding employment in Charlotte easy. Well-known websites such as Indeed, Monster and Craigslist all have sections dedicated to job vacancies in the city. Simply Hired and Snagajob are some more examples of online job sites. Another good way to keep up to date with the most recent job vacancies is to read the job listings advertised in local papers like the Charlotte Observer.

Income Taxation in Charlotte

In 2014, Charlotte eliminated the progressive income tax rate system. Now, all earners in the city pay a flat rate income tax of 5.75%, no matter what amount of income they receive. Charlotte does not employ the PAYE system; tax payers must file their own tax returns.

Expats moving from countries where they have never had to calculate and declare their own tax contributions may wish to hire the services of an accountant in the area. One of the easiest and most popular ways for residents to file their income taxes is to use an e-file. This helpful online resource makes filing tax returns extremely simple and straightforward. Tax payers living in Charlotte can find the e-file for North Carolina at North Carolina Department of Revenue. As well as this, the state Department of Revenue can be contacted through their website or at their office in Charlotte. This department can answer any tax queries that expats may have and offer general tax advice.
