• Green space and travel are close. 81% rate the natural environment positively and 87% the opportunity to travel, with direct trains and flights across Europe.

• Bureaucracy is the biggest gripe. Just 15% of expats in Berlin find it easy to deal with local authorities, the kind of red tape that defines the early months.

• Locals can feel cold and the city lonely. Only 28% say making local friends is easy and 49% feel welcome, and Americans describe a transient, reserved city.

• The weather and language weigh on people. Just 24% rate the climate positively and 22% say German is easy to learn.

• Housing and safety take adjusting. Only 16% rate housing affordability positively and 71% personal safety (vs. 81% globally).

For Americans, Berlin offers unbeatable culture, an international vibe, healthcare, and balance, at a lower cost than Munich. The trade-offs are heavy bureaucracy, a reserved city, and grey winters. Overall happiness (58%) sits below the global average, it rewards those who come for the culture and creativity.
